Cultivation Objectives
The Food Science and Engineering major at Shanghai Jiao Tong University adheres to the educational philosophy of value guidance, knowledge exploration, ability building, and personality cultivation. It aims to cultivate outstanding food engineering talents with social responsibility, innovation and teamwork spirit, international vision, and food engineering practical abilities, These talents are committed to solving food industry problems and improving the health level of the people. Upon graduation, students can become high-level composite talents in research & development, and production management in the field of food industry and related fields.
Graduates of this major are expected to achieve the following goals within 5 years’ work experience:
1) They possess a strong sense of social responsibility and a firm commitment to sustainable development, along with lofty aspirations and high moral standards.
2) By constantly expanding and enhancing their knowledge and skills, they possess broad and solid knowledge in multiple disciplines, enabling them to integrate and apply this knowledge to solve complex and advanced engineering problems.
3) They possess outstanding innovative abilities and further exploring the frontiers of science in their field, tackling industry challenges and technological bottlenecks, and have the pioneering spirit.
4) They have outstanding teamwork and organizational management abilities and can effectively play a leading or supporting role in a team.
5) They have a strong sense of international competition and excellent cross-cultural communication and exchange abilities.
Course Settings
The curriculum system for the major consists of four categories of courses: general education courses, professional education courses, practical education courses, and personalized education courses.
Study Duration and Credits
The Food Science and Engineering program is a four-year study program. Students who complete the curriculum and practical learning sessions stipulated in the program within the prescribed study period, obtain a total of 169 credits, complete their graduation project (thesis) and pass the defense, pass the swimming proficiency test as well, will be granted a degree of Bachelor of Engineering.

Up to October 2024, more than 80 undergraduate students are enrolled in the food science and engineering major.
